Be a light in your community!

“You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

— Matthew 5

Here are some simple ways to start making a difference right where you’re at.

1) Spend time with God.

The word ‘luminous’ means to be lit from within. That light is His Spirit in us. Like Jesus said, ‘Apart from Me you can do nothing.’

We simply can’t shine a light that we let grow dim. The good work He desires to do in and through us stems from time in His presence with the source of Light Himself, so we must prioritize this above all else before we can expect to bear good fruit for Him!

So grab a friend and do a devo together like one from She Reads Truth, The Daily Grace Co, or the YouVersion Bible app. This will be a source of encouragement and accountability as you draw closer to Him.

2) Love your family.

Start with your loved ones and go from there. We all desire to impact people’s lives, but let’s begin with the first people God’s given us to love: our families!

Spend time together. Focus on connection. Have a family day each week.

Reach out to a lonely cousin or grandparent. Love on your nieces and nephews. Send cards and needed items to a struggling family member.

As we’re faithful to prioritize our first ministry—the family—God will widen our circle of impact.

3) Look for needs!

Find people in need near you. Is there a group whose needs aren’t being addressed? Start an outreach, non-profit, or even a business to be a solution.

Ask God to help you make a positive impact around you. Here are some ideas:

  • Start a prayer group or block party in your neighborhood.

  • Create an outdoor pantry for those in need.

  • Bless your kids’ teachers with gifts.

  • Make care bags for the homeless.

  • Give gifts to local first responders.

4) Involve others.

Jesus often ministered with other people. He didn’t do it all solo. Seek out people who share your vision, and work together.

When we involve others in our efforts, our impact is magnified.

You can make it your family’s mission to make a difference! Kids love to see how they can help the people around them.

You may be surprised how God uses other people to reach those you never thought of or could on your own.

“You will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the Word of life.”

— Philippians 2
